The electric vehicle infrastructure is a crucial part of EV uptake in the UK.
By the end of the decade, Britain will ban the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles to make way for EVs.
However, the UK’s transition towards electric vehicles has been slow. One of the biggest hurdles to climb is the country’s charging infrastructure – which has gained a reputation for being unreliable and having limited choice.
But, is that the case? Has our charging infrastructure improved?
Here is everything you need to know about the current state of the UK’s electric vehicle charging network.
How many public charging points are in the UK?
A total of 73,699 charging points were recorded in the UK as of December 2024, according to EV statistics firm Zap Map.
This is across 37,011 charging stations and 108,410 connectors – with 1,105 net new charging devices installed last month.
What’s the increase in the country’s charging point installations over the last 12 months?
Nearly 20,000 charging points were installed in the country, according to year-on-year statistics.
In December 2023, 53,865 points were recorded, and more than 73,000 at the end of 2024 – representing a 37 per cent increase.
Which networks provide the most chargers?
The UK’s charging network provides lots of choices when it comes to topping up an electric vehicle.
The most commonly seen are Shell Recharge Ubitricity – which are the firm’s lamppost chargers with a recorded 9,000 devices.
Connected Kerb provides the most on-street chargers at 5,800, followed by Pod Point with its 5,100 supermarket and retail car park chargers.
What regions in the UK have the most chargers?
Greater London is the region that features the most chargers, totalling 22,211.
The South East comes in second place with 9,494 devices, followed by the West Midlands at 6,490 chargers.
Places with the lowest count of charging points in the country are the North East at just under 2,439. Whereas Northern Ireland has installed just 680 public chargers.
Are there more rapid-charging devices being installed?
The simple answer is, yes. In December 2023, there were a total of 10,118 rapid charging points in the UK. At the end of 2024, that figure had risen to 14,471 – representing a 43 per cent growth.
Ultra-rapid 150kW chargers have increased too. A total of 7,021 were installed last year – which is an 84 per cent rise compared to 2023’s figures.
What firm provides the most ultra-rapid chargers?
The firm that provides the most amount of ultra-rapid devices is Instavolt with a total of 1,801 across the country.
Tesla’s Supercharging network follows closely behind with 1,761, and in third place is BP Pulse with its 1,437 chargers.
How many charging hubs are in the UK?
An EV charging hub must include at least six or more chargers. At the end of 2024, there were 537 of them recorded in the country.
Meanwhile, 66 of these locations are designated for Tesla owners only. However, the American firm has announced that it is opening up a lot of these stations to other EV drivers.
